Title: Stop War in the Home, Muruga Watches, Skanda Shasti (1 of 4)
Category: Family, Festivals and Sacraments
Duration: 5 min. 26 seconds.
Date Given: November 13, 1999
Given by: Gurudeva

Lord Murugan, for those of you who are not familiar with this God, is a little bit difficult to know. Lord Ganesha, is very immediate and very active in the world now, which he demonstrates by drinking gallons and gallons of milk all over the world. We have discovered that in some temples He's still drinking milk. Of course, Lord Shiva is nearer than your hands and feet, more radiant, the sun within you. He is the source of your energy. The source of your light, that lights your thoughts. But Lord Muruga puts dharma into action.

In the ancient kingdoms and even today, the Maharaja is on his throne holding his scepter, which is prepared by many, many homas and many, many pujas by the Aadheenams of South India. Lord Muruga stands behind and speaks into the right ear of the Maharaja giving him instructions of justice, fairness to all, solving problems within his kingdom. His home base is the Pleiades and His natural state is Saravanabhava, the actual true nature of the mind. Without a thought, without a movement, with no karmas interfering. He's known as the God of war. Why? Because He solves problems and He brings peace into homes and countries and to states and nations. He's also a prominent God, bringing in the New Age. Some people are in the New Age right now. Other people are in the Old Age, catching up. It's an overlapping time.

Lord Muruga is the Lord of change, often known as the Red God. Red is the color of burning out old conditions and bringing in the new. Therefore, Murugan is worshiped all over the world through public penance, kavadi, where spears are inserted in the flesh, no blood is drawn. The pain of the kavadi heals the inner part of the mind, so that the karmas are mitigated. He is the God of group karma, often called kukarma or krishna karma or black karma.

You may wonder, why so many groups in the world today are suffering their karmas through hurricanes, earthquakes, floods, small wars? Why all the badness and all the fighting of interrelated families, families against families, fighting within the homes, fighting with the children, husbands fighting with wives and wives fighting with husbands? All finally accuMulates in the community and creates a disaster.

The Dalai Lama explains the condition of His people, driven out of His country because of the accuMulated sins of the Tibetan people that weren't mitigated, that were lived with. They weren't washed away through meditation, through apologies, through showing appreciation to one another, through performing penance, but hidden under the carpet, so to speak. The karmas finally accuMulated and the people lost everything that they had of value - scriptures, books, kingdom, government, religion - and scattered throughout the world.

When Lord Muruga sees this black karma happening, He is there to help each individual. No one is neglected. He adjusts his life or readjusts his life to new surroundings, new acquaintances, friends and even new family ties. So you can see, He is a very, very busy God.

If was Sun one and we had a number of guests with us for the morning homa. They receive vibhuti from Gurudeva before leaving the temple.

During his talk this morning Gurudeva mentions that in many states corporal punishment is against the law, and the children themselves know this. So, when children are hit by their parents, they are being taught that it is OK to break the law. That is part of the underlying message. Another unseen, unintended consequence of violent parenting.

The Rig Veda, mankind's oldest scripture says about the fire rite:

"Agni, well-kindled, bring the Gods for him who offers holy gifts. Worship them, Purifier, Priest."

"Son of Thyself, present, O Sage, our sacrifice to the Gods today."

"Sweet to the taste, that they may feast."

"Worthy is Agni to be praised by living as by ancient seers. He shall bring, hitherward the Gods."

Lucky young lady to come to Kauai Aadheenam so young of age and on such an auspicious day. This is Dipanjali all the way from Mauritius.

The parade from the Kadavul Shiva Temple to the Iraivan site as seen from afar.

Worship of Lord Ganesha at the Banyan tree.

Acharya Palaniswami speaks with one of the elder ladies, Pathma Kathirkamanathan, who met Gurudeva in Sri Lanka 30 years ago.

This lovely tree offers soft violet blossoms that shower upon the ground that we walk on as we go toward the temple.

"May Agni, [the Fire God] sapient-minded Priest, truthful, most gloriously great, The God, come hither with the Gods." --Rig Veda

News: The foundation for Iraivan had rested quiety with 10 million pounds of earth on top. This was removed and used to create Muruga Hill. Jeff Griffin and his team pressure washed the giant monolithic slab of concrete a few days ago: not a single crack! and zero settlement! The foundation did not settle even 1/8 of an inch. (A fact that somewhat confounds the soil engineers . . )

Everyone walks out to the newly built up Muruga hill.

There a special arati is performed.

A small Vel is drawn on the ground and worship performed, invoking for the first time Lord Muruga at his new elevation--20 feet above road level.

The next steps will be to seed the hill with rye and bermuda grass. The rye is a rapid growing annual that will "lock down" the soil while the permanent slower growing Bermuda grass takes root. A year later the rye will die off leaving a grass covered hill.

Plans for the top include a 6-8 foot tall image of Lord Dandapani, the sadhu form of Lord Muruga, a vel and a yantra, covered in some kind of open air mandapam.

This is our kind of "New Age" crowd. . .the coming generation of young Hindus. Gurudeva gives them all copies of the Saivite Hindu Religion Course.

We haven't had such a joyous bubbling group of young people here for years!

These families are subscribers to Hinduism Today visiting from Canada and New Jersey.

Gurudeva speaking to the guests about the consequences of corporal punishment.

A new arrival to our growing monastery population which includes numerous non-human residents--cows, cats, birds, rats, fish, wild boar, toads, frogs, countless varieties of bugs, spiders, rodents and now. A puppy dog! His name is "Zip" and we got him "out of jail" from the Hanapepe animal pound where his gas-chamber fate was thwarted by our compassionate Gurudeva who got the little puppy as the mascot and guardian of our "Subramuniya Ashram" where the resident guests and task force stay across the street from the San Marga land.

Gurudeva says yes, this dog does have a breed: "Pure-blooded Kauaian dog." We suspect terrier blood of the tall variety used for keeping sheep, intelligent and highly responsive to humans. The little puppy is absolutely over-joyed to be out of "animal pound prison" and in the loving hands of the monks. He will do a good job training our young ones to be gentle, caring and responsible toward another living being. Welcome to paradise, ZIP!
Chronicles

Three years ago we did not fully cognize the import of this daily missive from our little island to the world. But it is growing to become a document of sorts, with some historial significance. In order to "capitalize" on this daily record today we start a new "feature" which will document, in very short form, happenings here and around the world relating to our work and mission activities. In later years this will be a valuable resource. Much of this comes from the daily announcements made at lunch, when all the monks share news from their various departments, and if some of what you see here is a bit cryptic. . well, take heart that we know what it means!

Proceeds from this fund last forever; they're not a one-time gift. So gifts to this fund have eternal gratitude built into them. They live on in perpetuity.

Each month Gurudeva receives the income from the fund to be used at his own discretion to promote his work and mission around the globe. He loves this, for he knows that it comes from all the good souls who have met him and studied with him, traveled with him or just talked with him over the years. A contribution to this fund is tax-deductible.
